Simon spends more time with the Bridgerton family, and realizes he's growing closer to Daphne, despite his wish to stay single.Īt Lady Trowbridge's ball, Simon runs into the Duke of Middlethorpe, who has letters from Simon's father meant for Simon. When Anthony voiced his displeasure, Daphne and Simon brought him in on the arrangement, and he reluctantly agreed to let the charade continue. Daphne agreed to the plan, and the two carried on a fake courtship. ![]() Simon then gave Daphne an idea: they should pretend to court so that she could attract more suitors and he could keep mothers away. While dancing, he found out that Daphne could not attract any worthy suitors because they all felt she was too friendly to be considered a wife. He came over, and asked Daphne for a dance. They suggested Simon take on the task, and he agreed. They all saw Daphne being introduced to men by their mother, Violet, but no one had the courage to rescue her. He then met with Anthony and his younger brothers, Benedict and Colin. He fended them off as best he could, till Lady Danbury came to his aid. ![]() There, he was besieged by Ambitious Mamas and their daughters, who were trying to match Simon up with them. Simon got fed up with Daphne constantly changing her mind and headed from the garden into the ball. Over an unconscious Berbrooke, the two talked about whether to leave him there or have him sent home. During the ball, he met Daphne Bridgerton, who was trying to get away from Nigel Berbrooke. He still attended Lady Danbury's ball as a courtesy for her kindness towards him. He intended to never marry so that he would never have children and the Hastings line would die with him he wanted revenge on his father for abandoning him. ![]() Simon returned to England after hearing of his father's death. He finally returned six years later, after his father had died. Not willing to let his father ruin the progress he'd made, Simon left the country the next day, travelling around the world. Simon tried to speak, but was unable to in his father's presence. They came face-to-face at a ball in London, and the Duke embraced Simon, not caring about their estrangement. Simon was furious that his father acted like they hadn't been estranged for years. His father heard about his growing popularity, and used to simply boast of Simon as his son. In particular, he told off Beau Brummel, an arrogant, self-centered gentleman who liked to bully the ton, by responding to one of his insults with a succinct reply, which impressed and frightened the ton. He learned how to manage his stutter, and became known as a dangerous rake due to his quiet nature and small circle of friends. Simon completed his studies, and entered the ton, staying as far away from his father as possible. When Simon kept doing well in his studies, his father stopped asking for reports. His father was informed of his admission to Eton and Oxford, and paid Bow Street runners to inform him of Simon's progress. On holidays, instead of going to Clyvedon Castle, he would often spend time with friends' relatives, including Lady Danbury, whose nephew was Simon's classmate. He also became friends with Anthony Bridgerton while at Oxford. He did well in his classes, and went to Oxford, where he graduated with a first in mathematics. Simon took himself to Eton when his father refused to let him go to school, and used his courtesy title of Earl Clyvedon to get in. Simon walked away, hurt and swearing vengeance. They went to London, where Simon tried to show his father that he could speak, but seeing his father made Simon unable to speak, and The Duke mocked him before sending him away. After not receiving any response, Simon insisted on Nurse Hopkins taking him to see his father. Nurse Hopkins helped Simon improve his speech considerably by the time he was 11, and he wrote his father many letters telling him of his progress. His father immediately wrote him off, saying he was dead to him. When Simon was four, he was revealed to have a profound stutter. Simon was born to the Duke and Duchess of Hastings after many years of trying to have a child.
